Mineral Makeup – The Healthy Choice for Your Skin!

We all want to make healthy choices and Mineral Makeup is an easy one to make!  Mineral Cosmetics offer an exceptionally light, long wearing product that applies flawlessly without smearing or creasing, blends easily, and provides a beautiful radiance. However the benefits go far beyond these!
Mineral Makeup is suitable for even the most sensitive skin as it has anti-inflammatory properties which provide comfort and it also protects and replenishes damaged skin. Wearing these cosmetics will provide you with additional protection from UV rays, wind, and free radical damage. Unlike conventional cosmetics which quickly breed bacteria and must be disposed of periodically for safety reasons, Mineral Makeup does not allow for the germination of bacteria. This means you can safely use your cosmetics for a much longer time. It will not clog your pores, and therefore is an excellent choice for acne sufferers. It is chemical free and hypo-allergenic. An added benefit is that it reduces the symptoms of aging which means your makeup becomes a part of your anti-aging skincare regime.

Mineral Makeup is the preferred choice of dermatologists and plastic surgeons. It is so safe for your skin it can safely be used after procedures such as laser surgery, microdermabrasion and chemical peels.

Not All Mineral Makeup is Created Equally

Many drugstore, department store and other retail mineral makeups contain ingredients that are cause for concern such as Parabens, Talc, Boron Nitride and synthetic fillers. Even high end retail mineral makeups often contain these ingredients so it is wise to know what you are investing in. Parabens are highly controversial due to their ability to mimic estrogen  (which influences breast cancer) and the fact that Paraben has been found in breast cancer tumours. Paraben is also considered a factor in the increasingly early puberty rate among girls. Talc has been linked to respiratory cancers and Boron Nitride has been shown to create liver and kidney disruptions with prolonged exposure.

SST Cosmetics
At Paramount DaySpa Salon & Boutique we proudly offer SST Cosmetics. SST was created by Saskatoon business woman Sharon Sharpe-Titus. The line contains NO Talc, Boron Nitride or Gluten and is never tested on animals. The line is Paraben Free. Rather than preserving their products with Parabens they use high levels of anti-oxidants which have tremendous benefit to the skin.

The products are manufactured in Italy, and the formulations 1467401_10155598922690790_8395728999781137524_ncontain the highest quality, finely milled minerals from around the globe. Each formula contains only minerals and  (rather than synthetic fillers) ingredients that benefit the skin. These additional ingredients are what take the minerals from powder to their final form (gel, cream etc.) and create a unique cosmetic that has a luxurious feel and is rich in nourishment and protection for the skin.

SST offers a wide range of  professional quality products in an array of fashionable and flattering colours for any age or occasion, including three types of foundation, a CC cream, tinted primer and a unique skin perfecting balm.

Pigmentation Problems and the Paramedical Difference

10251901_10152808829828026_6978901549211088940_nA 40 year old guest came to me with concerns about her freckling and hyperpigmentation. As the mother of three active, young boys and a runner, she spends a great deal of her time outdoors year round. Her older sisters and her father have significant pigmentation problems and she was alarmed by the increasing development of dark spots she was seeing in her own skin. She realized genetics was working against her. Both her sisters saw a significant increase in pigmentation due to hormonal influences at about this age so she knew she needed to be proactive. After trying several non-professional products and solutions with less than satisfactory results she was looking for a simple, effective skin care regimen. Her priority was addressing the pigmentation issue but she also wanted assistance in anti-aging and comfort for her very dehydrated skin.

We found an appropriate cleanser and toner for her to use each morning and evening, and an exfoliant for use twice a week. Then I referred her to our Swissline Cell Shock White Face and Eyes Essence serum. This product is unique from others on the market in that it not only fades the existing dark spots from the skin, but it also helps stop the formation of new ones. Swissline is a paramedical line. What this means is that it contains pharmaceutical grade ingredients. With Swissline you can be certain that you are using an extremely effective form of skin care which has been extensively researched and tested to ensure the best results.

111-cellshockwhite2She began using Cell Shock White Face and Eyes Essence along with Guinot Pleine Vie cream twice daily in the middle of September. By the end of January she had the results you see now. She has continued to spend a great deal of her time outdoors. Obviously she is very happy with her results. Both the reduction in pigmentation and the anti-aging effect will continue to improve over time with regular use of her regimen. Once we have attained our optimal result we will move her to another Cell Shock White product in order to keep the cells stimulated and maintain the result.

Skin is constantly renewing itself so when we develop issues with pigmentation it is not enough just to fade the surface spots. The melanin that creates those spots will continue to be produced by our cells and come to the surface. The Cell Shock White line features ingredients will block the production of melanin. This approach creates a more uniform complexion overall. The Face and Eyes Essence serum also differs from other pigmentation treatments in that it is designed for use on the eye area as well. In addition to treating pigmentation issues this serum helps reverse fine lines and wrinkles. It improves the skin’s ability to produce collagen, while also lifting, firming, and moisturizing the face and eyes.

The Swissline Cell Shock White line is a comprehensive paramedical grade range of products. The line includes a cleanser, toner, serum, day/night cream, and intensive night cream.  Each of these products work to fade existing pigmentation and prevent the formation of new spots within the skin.  There is also a Swissline facial treatment which reinforces the effect of this regimen, the Intensive Brightening Treatment. These are also all highly effective anti-aging treatments. Your Paramount esthetician can assist you in selecting the appropriate product for your skin.

Today’s Anti-Aging Options

The search for the ultimate Anti-Age products and treatments consumes the beauty industry. Google has over 5.5 million results for anti-aging secrets. With so many options to choose from: Face-lifts, Botox, Special creams, Facial Treatments, Home-made remedies, and more, how do you know which method is the best for you? Where do you start?

By doing some research you will be able to make a more educated decision based on your individual needs and the options available.

What are your Options?

With so many technological advancements, the beauty industry is able to give the youthful look to consumers without going under the knife or injecting chemicals into your body. These advancements in skin care and facial treatments have made it possible to reverse many different skin conditions, including, but not limited to fine lines, wrinkles, acne, pigmentation, slackening of the skin, broken capillaries, age-spots, etc. With the use of this new technology we can take your skin to the next level.

BOTOX is a very common procedure that women and men undergo to smooth out fine lines and wrinkles, which can give them a more youthful appearance. But what is BOTOX? BOTOX is a trademark name for Botox-Injection-Picturethe neurotoxic protein, botulinum toxin, which is produced by the barcerium clostridium botulinum. In simple terms, it is a protein that works to relax or paralyze the facial muscles by blocking nerve impulses. The result is that your muscles can no longer contract, so the wrinkles relax and soften. It usually takes two to four days to see cosmetic improvement and the effects tend to last from three to six months. BOTOX is metabolized into our bodies over time, thus continual injections are needed for long lasting results.

Side Effects

It is important that you do your research when considering injections and fillers. There is current research that brings to questioning the possibility of potentially harming side effects in non-injected areas of the body. The protein that is injected in the body can weaken and cause sagging not only in areas where it was injected, but also other areas of the body as well. This raises concern for the potential of other long term side effects.

A few treatments that Paramount DaySpa Salon & Boutique offer are:

Hydradermie Lift

Guinot Hydradermie Lift. This ‘work out’ for your muscles creates a lifting effect by toning the complexion, smoothing wrinkles and lifting facial contours. It can be performed all over the face, including the eyes and mouth and also includes the neck. After only one treatment you will notice results and there is no down time.

Virtual Surgery. This intense anti-aging treatment improves the cell’s oxygen intake and skin regeneration, providing immediate and cumulative “face-lifting” results. A fiber mask that applied to the face to seal and aid in the delivery of medical grade products, re-balancing the skin’s natural renewal process, tightening and firming the facial contour.

Dermasweep. State of the art non-invasive exfoliation and skin resurfacing treatment that stimulates blood flow, which in turn stimulates collagen formulation thus firming and toning the skin; cleans pores, and removes skin debris. This type of exfoliation improves pigmentation, acne scarring, sun damage, and forces the cells to turn over, resulting in a smooth, even complexion.

What is the difference between professional and non-professional skin care?

Professional Skin Care can be found at professional salons and must be recommended by a professional esthetician. Non-professional Skin Care is mainly found in department and drug stores and is sold by a sales person. What does this mean to you? The skin has many layers and your professional or non-professional products will affect it differently as they work on different levels of your epidermis (skin).

Your skin has many layers, the top is the epidermal layer and the deepest is the dermal layer. According to Yon-Ka educator, Sheila Nielsen, professional product is allowed by the FDA to cause a reaction. When skin care causes a reaction it creates a change in the dermal layer and non-professional products are not allowed by the FDA to cause a reaction. Therefore, non-professional products will hydrate, tighten, and firm the top epidermal layer of the skin, but in a few days when that dead layer of skin sloughs off, you are back at the beginning again needing to re-hydrate, re-tighten, and re-firm. It is a never ending cycle. To see long lasting results you need to correct your concerns on the dermal layer, where the root of the problem lies, so eventually your skin reaches a level of maintenance and prevention.

Paramount DaySpa Salon & Boutique offers professional, internationally recognized skin care lines with the highest quality ingredients for the most advanced results. Guinot, Yon-Ka and Swiss line are all created in pharmaceutical grade laboratories with their own exclusive teams creating products that are tested on both clinical and consumer levels to guarantee results. Along with other benefits they have complimentary facial treatments to enhance and boost results.

With education, professional advice and products you will be seeing a more youthful you in the mirror!

Sanitation, Hygiene and Spa Treatments

Pedicure-feet-on-the-beachA spa treatment is meant to be a relaxing and fun experience. When you go for a regular treatment at your trusted spa it is fine to approach it simply as that. However, when travelling abroad you may want to use a measure of caution. Contaminated tools can lead to minor infections or even serious medical conditions like Hepatitis and in rare cases the transmission of the HIV virus that causes AIDS. Here are some tips to make your vacation pedicure or manicure safe.

  1. Be sure the work area has been completely cleaned of nail clippings and foot filings from previous treatments. (In addition to being a risk this basic is a huge red flag.)
  2. The water you place your hands or feet in should be fresh and clean, in a thoroughly cleaned and sanitized container. If your treatment includes a whirlpool foot bath it is advisable to ask that your service provider to not turn the bubbles on. Studies show the jets harbour bacteria.
  3. The tools used on you should have been scrubbed with hot water and soap to remove debris and then soaked in an approved chemical for about 10 minutes to kill any pathogens. (There are also UV light or Autoclave sterilizers, however be aware they take  much longer to work and so they may not be used as reliably when a spa is extremely busy.)hand-sanitizer
  4. Ideally, your treatment provider should be wearing gloves. If not, they absolutely MUST wash their hands or use sanitizer between clients.
  5. Consider not shaving the day of your pedicure to reduce risk of infection as shaving creates small openings in the skin, making it vulnerable.
  6. Be aware that the Health Protection Agency recently advised people at higher risk of infection (such as diabetics) to avoid the trendy “fish pedicure” due to risk of cross contamination.Fish Pedicure

Whether at home or abroad don’t ever be afraid to ask about your spa’s sanitation practices. If you see something that concerns you, speak up.

Please be assured that at Paramount we take your health and safety very seriously. All of our sanitation protocols meet or exceed governmental guidelines and are carefully followed by each member of our team. We do this so that you can relax and enjoy your service safely!

The Truth about Professional Skin Care Products

As someone who came to esthetics later in life I have experienced a steep learning curve when it comes to skincare. I have always cared about and for my skin. It was something that developed into an interest sufficient to become my profession. In the years before I went back to school I loved to research skincare ingredients and how they worked. However I had no idea when I began working at Paramount DaySpa Salon & Boutique just how much I was going to learn by using the products myself.

Years ago I had developed very severe hyperpigmentation. These dark patches had always been a source of embarrassment for me but as a skincare professional I was extremely self conscious. I also had developed loose crêpey Guinot skin under my eyes which I was struggling to treat as the skin seemed too sensitive for anything I tried on them. I had progressed over the years from drugstore to high end department store to professional product and I had never found anything that even began to work on such a severe pigmentation problem, never mind my eyes. So when I began working at Paramount I covered the pigmentation with heavy makeup and started using a Guinot eye cream along with the rest of a Guinot regimen. Remarkably, and I am embarrassed to say, I saw a change in my eyes. Not overnight, but gradually and enough so that I felt my eyes looked more appropriate to my age.

At one point I met with a product representative who was pitching a line designed to pull pigmentation from the skin. It sounded like exactly what I needed. I need to say that by this point my product education and training was complete and I had attended additional training sessions. To say that I am obsessive about the education side of skincare would be an understatement. Knowledge is crucial to me in my ability to prescribe appropriately for my clients. Her description of the regimen was excellent. The theory was sound. It probably would have worked to a certain degree eventually if it had not caused such severe SwissLineirritation. The product did not account for the level of inflammation the ingredients caused. Apparently this was not all that unusual with this product line. After a few weeks of use I could see no difference but my face was actually sore. Once I was healed I decided to try our existing system for the problem, Swissline’s Cell Shock White. Almost immediately I began to see a change in my skin and without any irritation whatsoever! Even better was that it not only was lifting the pigment deposits but it was also treating fine lines and improving the elasticity. My favourite product, the Face and Eyes Essence ( a serum ) has even improved my under eye contour quite dramatically. This system made such a difference that people comment on the change. My Dad ( who had the same issue ) started using it too.

Recently I completed Swissline’s Youth Inducing system and now I can honestly say I no longer feel that I have an issue with pigmentation. Interestingly, my eyes are no longer an issue for me either. I can honestly say I feel as though I have never looked better.

When I reflect on the time and experience since I began working at Paramount I realize it boils down to a few core truths. Not all skincare is created equally. Taking that a step further not all professional skincare is created equally. And most importantly, I am very lucky to work somewhere that allows me to provide my clients ( and myself ) with some of the highest quality skincare products available.

65 Years Young

Paramount65thlogo_blueWHITE_300dpi(3) SmallParamount has been making residents of Saskatoon look great for 65 years. “Paramount Beauty Salon” was brought to life by Herman Barrett back in 1950, located in the York Building on 23rd Street. 2 years later, Ellen Gaunt began working with Mr. Barrett as his receptionist. Ellen went on to become the second owner of Paramount (1968) and also the driving force towards bringing esthetic services to Paramount and Saskatoon. By 1955 she started offering the Paramount client, facial waxing, brow tinting, manicures, makeup and her real passion, facial treatments.

In 1966 Paramount moved to the lower level location at 145-2nd Avenue No. It was here that the esthetic side of Paramount really developed. It was in the 1970’s that pedicures, sculptured nails and artificial lashes (yes, we were doing them back then too!) were introduced. Women’s fashions and a ceramic boutique were also offered during that time. 1977 brought us the very first “Hydradermie” facial machine from Guinot. This signature Guinot treatment was ground-breaking in the facial industry at that time with its use of galvanic current to help penetrate nutrients into the skin offering a level of hydration that standard facial treatments were unable to accomplish.

The 1980’s saw Paramount offering electrolysis, tanning beds, massage, body wraps, and the first “Non-surgical Face-lift” machine that used electrical current to stimulate facial muscles, creating amazing results and long-term effects. Also during this time Ellen introduced the “Paramount Charm Classes” to young Saskatoon women, instructing them in proper skin, nail and hair care.

In 1994, Ellen realized her life-long dream of opening Saskatoon’s first full service Day Spa. Paramount relocated to a beautiful new facility on 1st Avenue North offering full spa & salon services including full and half day spa packages. Saskatoon women (and even a few men at that time) were quick to embrace this relatively new concept (in Saskatoon) and were anxious to go “spa-ing”!

As Ellen approached her “golden years” she wanted to find someone that she would feel confident to take over the reins of her “Paramount Baby”. She found that someone in Laura Dutka. Laura purchased Paramount from Ellen in August, 2000 and relocated it to its current location on the corner of 2nd Avenue and King Street. Since then Paramount has maintained its position as a prominent fixture in the Saskatoon spa industry. Over the past 14 years Laura has expanded the Paramount offering to include laser services, giftware, jewelry, women’s fashions, and the very popular Spa Suite, where groups of 2 to 50 can enjoy social time along with their spa services. And with new licensing legislation you can now enjoy your favorite beverage while having your Paramount spa or salon service.

Paramount has always strived to be on the forefront of offering exceptional quality skin care services and corresponding products for its customers to use at home. This goal lead to the introduction of the YonKa (France) and Guinot (France) lines of products in the mid 1970’s, followed by Babor (Germany) in the early 1980’s. More recently in 2010, SwissLine (Switzerland), an advanced paramedical line, was introduced. Gehwol (Germany) is another line of exceptional quality that is used in all Paramount pedicures and offered for at-home use.

Paramount maintains a strong focus on the training and education of its staff and in turn, educating our guests so they are able to make informed decisions regarding their skin, nail and hair care services and product purchases.

Over the years, the service menu and the décor may have changed but Paramount has always and will always strive to deliver to its guests, the best we can offer in quality and value of services and products.
